چکیده

Internal gravity waves are a key process linking the large-scale mechanical forcing of the oceans to small-scale turbulence and mixing. In this review, we focus on internal waves generated by barotropic tidal flow over topography. We review progress made in the past decade toward understanding the different processes that can lead to turbulence during the generation, propagation, and reflection of internal waves and how these processes affect mixing. We consider different modeling strategies and new tools that have been developed. Simulation results, thewealth of observationalmaterial collected during large-scale experiments, and new laboratory data reveal how the cascade of energy from tidal flow to turbulence occurs through a host of nonlinear processes, including intensified boundary flows, wave breaking, wave-wave interactions, and the instability of high-mode internal wave beams. The roles of various nondimensional parameters involving the ocean state, roughness geometry, and tidal forcing are described. 195 Click here to view this article's online features: • Download figures as PPT slides • Navigate linked references • Download citations • Explore related articles • Search keywords ANNUAL REVIEWS Further A nn u. Tidal flow over topography: effect of excursion number on wave energetics and turbulence

The excursion number, Ex = U0/Ωl, is a parameter that characterizes the ratio of streamwise fluid advection during a tidal oscillation of amplitude U0 and frequency Ω to the streamwise topographic length scale l. Direct numerical simulations are performed to study how internal gravity waves and turbulence change when Ex is varied from a low value (typical of a ridge in the deep ocean) to a valu...

Parallel Computation of Gravity Wave Turbulence in the Earth’s Atmosphere

Gravity waves (GWs) are ubiquitous internal waves in which the restoring force is buoyancy. In the Earth’s atmosphere, GWs are generated whenever a parcel of air is disturbed from its equilibrium position. Disturbing sources include topographic features (e.g., mountains), convective instabilities (e.g., thunderstorms), frontal motions, and oscillations of jet streams. When the amplitude of a GW...

Decaying turbulence in neutral and stratified fluids

which is considerably longer than previous measurements at the same mesh Reynolds number (Re = 48260). The stratified experiment resulted in a decay rate virtually identical to that of the neutral case through W,t/M = 275. However the decay rate sharply decreased after this time when the field of turbulence was replaced by internal gravity waves. A critical Richardson number marks the transitio...

Generation of internal waves by sheared turbulence: experiments

A series of experiments is presented that model the generation of internal gravity waves in the ocean by the forcing of turbulent eddies in the surface mixed layer. The experimental setup consists of a shallowmixed upper layer and a deep continuously stratified lower layer. A source of turbulence is dragged through the upper layer. Internal waves can freely propagate in the lower layer. The inte...

Parametrization of momentum and energy depositions from gravity waves generated by tropospheric hydrodynamic sources

The mechanism of generation of internal gravity waves (IGW) by mesoscale turbulence in the troposphere is considered. The equations that describe the generation of waves by hydrodynamic sources of momentum, heat and mass are derived. Calculations of amplitudes, wave energy ̄uxes, turbulent viscosities, and accelerations of the mean ̄ow caused by IGWs generated in the troposphere are made. A com...
